Teaching

Teaching and research are deeply intertwined in my work. I believe the best way to learn social science is by doing social science. My courses emphasize hands-on research—whether through survey design, focus groups, artifact analysis, or collaborative projects. I encourage students to connect big theoretical ideas with the lived realities they study. A full list of courses I have taught can be found on my CV.

Areas of Teaching

I regularly teach courses in:

  • Political Sociology and Development — globalization, political culture, social policy, and Latin America.

  • Science, Religion, and Morality — public perspectives on science and religion, and kindness, community, and connection.

  • Research Methods — survey design, mixed methods, and advanced approaches to data collection and analysis.

Selected Courses

  • Public Perspectives on Science and Religion — examines the relationship between science and religion in contemporary public life.

  • Sociology of International Development — examines major theories of development, from modernization and dependency to more contemporary approaches, with a focus on Latin America.

  • Survey Research Methods — introduces students to the design, implementation, and analysis of survey research, culminating in student-designed projects.

  • Kindness, Community, Connection — explores how everyday moral concepts like kindness shape social life and institutions.

Teaching Recognition

  • Student-nominated Promoting Intellectual Engagement (PIE) Award, University of Wyoming (2014, 2017).

  • College of Arts and Sciences Top Ten Professor Award, University of Wyoming (2017).

Beyond the Classroom

I also regularly teach and lead workshops on research project management and morality, including mixed methods courses at the Interuniversity Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) Summer Program at the University of Michigan.
